Gasherbrum IV was originally surveyed as K3, following the historic system of Karakoram peak designations. The name Gasherbrum is often translated as “Shining Wall”, but the Balti name is more accurately associated with the meaning “beautiful mountain”.

Gasherbrum IV was first successfully climbed on 6 August 1958 by Walter Bonatti and Carlo Mauri as members of an Italian expedition led by Riccardo Cassin. The successful route followed the Northwest Ridge.
The mountain has remained a highly respected technical objective. Later expeditions attempted its difficult west face and other routes, illustrating the technical complexity and commitment required to climb the peak.
